The Water Jesus Gives

Jesus says, "Whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water, welling up to eternal life." cf. John 4: 13 - 14.

The footnote in my Bible says that "welling up" is an expression with a vigorous meaning like "leaping up." Jesus was speaking about a vigorous abundant life.

When we call on the name "Jesus," we enter into his presence. What a beautiful name it is!

Jesus, Our parched lives are in need of your living water. Please be a fountain of life welling up within us and may your precious life and love overflow into the parched lives of people around us. Come, Lord Jesus, come.

  1. Water is such a powerful image. God started creation from the waters: Genesis 1:1-2 "In the beginning, when God created the heavens and the earth and the earth was without form or shape, with darkness over the abyss and a mighty wind sweeping over the waters..." Water is absolutely essential for life - we only live a few days if deprived of water. It cleanses us and cools us to keep us comfortable. It can be harnessed to generate energy which provides us with electricity for countless benefits and provides a means of transportation. What a great gift from God!
A few years ago, we visited Niagara Falls and I remember being so moved spiritually by standing close to the power of that rushing water. I reflected on how that water, so necessary to our lives, could at the same time be so dangerous if we fell into it. The beauty of it gave joy to my heart and I loved just watching it flow but I knew I had to follow the rules and stay behind the guardrail, or I would be lost!
Our God is powerful in the same way. He is so good to us - loving us and providing for our needs, pouring life into us that we may thrive, guiding us, like a current in the river, to what is best for us.
What does He ask of us in return? He asks that we love Him back, follow His commandments which are right and just, and give Him respect. Is this too much to ask? No, it is not! It may not always be easy for us to stay the course, but it is not too much to ask as long as we keep casting our nets as Our Lord directs!
Thank You, Lord, for all Your blessings - especially water! May we be refreshed daily at Your Fountain of Life, guided along the river of Your Love, and inviting to all who You call to board Your Boat.
